A very brief history.  Mid Ulster Walking Club was founded in the Autumn of 1989,and has been in existence for almost 28 years. The first outing took place in September 1989. A few already experienced walkers and a number of "novices"  started from Downhill on the coast of County Londonderry and headed upwards along Bishop's Road towards the cliffs of Binevenagh, they all returned some 10 miles later fired with enthusiasm. The main motivation and enthusiasm in the early days came largely from Trevor Mackay, Eric Ferguson and Jack Kerr (Jack and Trevor are pictured opposite).  Within a short time numbers built up to 30, and in recent years membership has gradually increased to almost 100,with walkers coming from Belfast, Larne, Ballynahinch, Antrim and Magherafelt as well as Dungannon and Cookstown. In 2008 walks were extended to include alternate Thursdays. This fulfilled an obvious need, and now, in 2017 , Thursdays often attract over 20 walkers. M.U.W.C. helped run 'Sperrintrek' walks in conjunction with Cookstown District Council in the past ,a highly successful venture.
